Following the success of 'Awarapan 2', producer Vishesh Bhatt confirms that 'Jannat 3' is in development, with scripting already underway.
Islamabad, Pakistan Aug 17, 2026 ALN: Following its August 14 release, Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 is enjoying a successful theatrical run. The sequel’s success has now brought attention back to another well-known franchise.
Producer Vishesh Bhatt revealed that Jannat 3, the third installment in the series previously led by Emraan Hashmi, is currently in development. This announcement comes at a time when Bollywood is witnessing a resurgence of interest in sequels and franchise films, often driven by nostalgia and the established fan bases of earlier entries.
Speaking to Zoom, Vishesh shared that after completing Awarapan 2, he is actively exploring the prospect of reviving Jannat. This reflects a broader trend in the Indian film industry where successful films often lead to sequels, as producers aim to capitalize on the established popularity of characters and storylines.
When asked whether the third film would come to fruition, he responded, “Awarapan ke baad mein, I am absolutely looking at Jannat 3.” Regarding the progress of the script, he noted, “Vahi cheez pe kaam chal raha hain,” adding, “We are investigating Jannat 3 after Awarapan 2, and the scripting is underway.” This indicates that the creative process is already in motion, with a focus on developing a compelling narrative that resonates with fans of the franchise.
The Jannat franchise debuted in 2008, starring Hashmi as Arjun Dixit alongside Sonal Chauhan as Zoya. The original film was well-received, praised for its music and performances, and it became a significant success at the box office. A sequel featuring Hashmi in the lead role followed in 2012, further solidifying the franchise's status in the industry. The films are often categorized as romantic thrillers, exploring themes of love, crime, and redemption, which have engaged audiences over the years.
Vishesh also dismissed claims that Awarapan 2 was produced merely to capitalize on nostalgia, clarifying that distributors initially showed little interest in the project and that it was not intended as a cash grab. This is an important distinction, as the perception of sequels as mere cash grabs can undermine their artistic merit and the hard work that goes into their production.
He detailed, “Nobody in the market came to buy the film. We put our own money into it. Yes, the market did wake up when the film was ready.” This statement highlights the risks producers often take when investing in projects that may not initially attract widespread interest. The film industry can be unpredictable, and many factors influence a film's commercial success, including marketing strategies, audience reception, and competition from other films.
Additionally, the producer addressed the box-office clash with Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. According to Vishesh, the simultaneous release does not represent a direct content clash, as the two films belong to different genres and appeal to distinct audiences. This perspective is crucial in understanding how films are positioned in the market, as different genres can coexist without detracting from one another's success.
“And the hope is, it only comes down to aapko shows mile ke nahi mile,” Vishesh remarked. “Jisme clash ka vo hota hain ke aapko cinema mile hi nahi. Nahi toh aisa koi clash nahi hota hain. There is no content clash, unless they are the same kind of film. So many times on a weekend the audience watches both of them. I have done that in Lagaan and Gadar.” This statement reflects the reality of audience behavior, where viewers often choose to watch multiple films in a single outing, provided that they are not competing for the same demographic.
Jannat originally released in theaters on May 16, 2008, and went on to perform strongly at the box office. According to Sacnilk, the film grossed ₹29.93 crore in India and ₹40.39 crore worldwide. The franchise returned in 2012 with its sequel, with both entries directed by Kunal Deshmukh. The success of the Jannat films can be attributed to their engaging storytelling, strong performances, and memorable soundtracks, which have left a lasting impact on audiences.
The announcement of Jannat 3 comes at a time when the film industry is increasingly looking towards established franchises as a reliable source of revenue. This trend raises questions about creativity and originality in filmmaking, as studios may prioritize sequels over new stories. However, for fans of the Jannat series, the prospect of a third installment is exciting, as it promises to revisit beloved characters and themes that resonated with audiences in the past.
As the development of Jannat 3 progresses, it will be interesting to see how the filmmakers choose to evolve the story and characters. The success of the previous films sets a high bar for expectations, and the creative team will need to balance nostalgia with innovation to capture the interest of both returning fans and new viewers. The evolving landscape of Bollywood, marked by the interplay of traditional storytelling and modern cinematic techniques, will also play a significant role in shaping the outcome of this anticipated sequel.
