Michael Kutryk, owner of the cabin from HBO's 'Heated Rivalry', shares insights on his decision to allow the show's return for a second season.

Michael Kutryk, the owner of the now-famous cabin featured in “Heated Rivalry” Season 1, has recently reflected on the decision to allow the HBO production team to return for a second season. This decision was not taken lightly, as Kutryk expressed that he needed to engage in some "soul searching" before coming to a conclusion about the show's return to his property.

In a conversation with HGTV, Kutryk revealed, "I did a little bit of soul searching about allowing them to come back. I know they need it, and I realize I [could] be difficult and try to squeeze them, but I [couldn’t] bring myself to do that." This sentiment highlights the internal conflict many property owners face when their personal spaces become the backdrop for public entertainment. The balance between personal privacy and the allure of fame can be a challenging one, particularly when the production involves a storyline that is both provocative and intimate.

Heated Rivalry Season 2

When approached by the production team for Season 2, Kutryk recounted an interesting negotiation. He shared that the initial inquiry from the producers was straightforward: "When they called, they said, ‘How much do you want?’" He humorously noted that he brought up a minor issue regarding damage to a table, suggesting that the production team had inadvertently scratched it during their previous shoot. Despite this, he ultimately settled on a price he deemed "very reasonable," leaving the producers both surprised and appreciative of his willingness to collaborate. In a display of goodwill, Kutryk even mentioned that he did not insist they replace the damaged table, which speaks to his amicable relationship with the production team.

Kutryk’s cabin gained significant attention after being featured in the Season 1 finale of “Heated Rivalry,” titled “The Cottage.” In this episode, the narrative centers around the characters Shane Hollander (played by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie), who escape to the remote family cabin for what is portrayed as a private getaway. This setting has become almost iconic among fans of the series, adding layers of intrigue and intimacy to the characters' relationship.

Reflecting on the impact of the show, Kutryk admitted to being taken aback by the explicit nature of the source material. He mentioned his surprise upon listening to Rachel Reid’s “Game Changer,” the audiobook on which the series is based. "My jaw just dropped as I listened. The pretty explicit nature of the book made me wonder just what they’d be filming … and showing!" he recalled. This response underscores the challenges of adapting literature to screen, particularly when the content may not align with the expectations of all stakeholders involved, including property owners.

Despite the initial shock, Kutryk seems to have accepted the nature of the production. "I just thought, OK, they’re gonna film what they’re gonna film. What’s done is done," he stated, indicating a level of resignation and acceptance of the creative process. This acceptance may also reflect the broader implications of how personal spaces are transformed into public domains through the lens of film and television.

As for the future, Kutryk remains uncertain about how long he will continue to share his retreat with the production team. He acknowledged, "We’ll see after Season 2 airs what demand is like. It’s still true: I’m a private guy. This is my retreat. I built this to get away from the world, so I don’t know how much longer I’ll continue to share it." This statement reveals a tension between the allure of potential fame and the desire for personal privacy, a common dilemma faced by individuals whose lives intersect with the entertainment industry.

“Heated Rivalry” Season 2 has already garnered attention, having been greenlit in December 2025, with a release date expected in April 2027. The series, available on HBO Max and Crave, continues to follow the lives of professional hockey stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. The plot thickens as they navigate their careers while maintaining a facade of fierce competition on the ice, all while engaging in a secret romance off the rink. This duality of their relationship reflects broader themes of identity, societal expectations, and the complexities of love in the public eye.

The implications of Kutryk's experience extend beyond his personal narrative. They touch on the evolving relationship between media productions and the individuals whose lives and spaces they depict. As the lines blur between private sanctuaries and public spectacles, property owners like Kutryk must navigate the delicate balance of sharing their homes while preserving their privacy. The success of “Heated Rivalry” not only highlights the popularity of LGBTQ+ narratives in mainstream media but also raises questions about ownership, consent, and the ramifications of turning private spaces into public stories. As audiences eagerly await the release of Season 2, the ongoing dialogue surrounding these issues is likely to continue, shaping the future of how personal spaces are portrayed in the realm of entertainment.
