Hiren Chandra Nath emphasizes the importance of positive thinking and connection with nature during a student induction program at Assam Royal Global University.

“Cultivate a positive outlook towards life. Positive thoughts and positive actions create a positive vibe. Stay connected with nature and always remember that, as Srimanta Sankardev taught us, among the countless heavenly bodies in the universe, the Earth is unique and precious.”

This was the message delivered by Hiren Chandra Nath, IPS (Retd.), former Special ADGP, Special Branch, Assam Police, while addressing the newly inducted undergraduate students of The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) on the second day of Deeksharambh 2026, the University’s annual Student Induction Programme, here today.

The day’s other distinguished speaker was C. A. Rahman, IFS (Retd.). Delivering an inspiring address, Hiren Chandra Nath urged the students to nurture optimism, discipline, and a positive mindset. Stressing the importance of physical and mental well-being, he said, “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Money lost is nothing lost, but health lost is everything lost.” He advised the students to choose their company wisely, observing that a person’s character is greatly influenced by the people with whom they associate. Encouraging them to remain close to nature, he remarked that Earth is the only known planet that sustains life and therefore deserves care, respect, and gratitude.

Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the great Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardev, he reiterated that among the countless heavenly bodies in the universe, Earth occupies a unique place and must be preserved for future generations. Nath further urged the students to remain respectful towards their parents, teachers, and everyone who contributes to their growth and well-being. He emphasized that kindness, humility, and good conduct create harmony and spread positivity wherever one goes.

In recent years, the importance of mental health and well-being has gained significant attention, particularly among students who face various pressures as they transition into higher education. The advice given by Nath resonates with contemporary discussions around mental health, as research indicates that a positive mindset can enhance resilience, improve academic performance, and foster better relationships among peers. By emphasizing the need for a healthy body and mind, Nath aligns his message with the growing recognition of holistic education, which integrates emotional and physical well-being into the academic experience.

Furthermore, the concept of choosing one's company wisely is particularly relevant in today's digital age, where social media influences and peer pressure can significantly impact an individual's mental state. The notion that one's character is shaped by their associations encourages students to be mindful of their interactions, fostering a community where positivity can thrive. This is especially crucial in a university setting, where students are not only building their academic careers but also their personal identities.

In addition to his emphasis on personal development, Nath's call for respect towards parents, teachers, and peers highlights the importance of gratitude and acknowledgment in personal growth. Respectful relationships create a supportive environment conducive to learning and development, which is essential for students embarking on their academic journeys. This message is particularly pertinent in the context of Indian culture, where familial and communal ties are deeply valued. By fostering respect and gratitude, students can cultivate a supportive network that enhances their educational experience.

Nath's address also touched on the broader implications of environmental stewardship, drawing from the teachings of Srimanta Sankardev, a revered figure in Assamese culture and spirituality. His teachings encourage individuals to recognize their responsibility towards the environment, which is especially relevant in the context of climate change and ecological degradation. By urging students to care for the Earth, Nath is not only promoting a positive mindset but also instilling a sense of responsibility towards future generations. The call for environmental awareness aligns with global initiatives aimed at sustainability and conservation, emphasizing the interconnectedness of personal well-being and ecological health.

Calling upon the students to lead lives guided by discipline, integrity, and compassion, he encouraged them to become responsible citizens capable of making meaningful contributions to society. This message underscores the role of education in shaping not only knowledgeable individuals but also ethical and socially responsible citizens. In a rapidly changing world, the ability to contribute positively to society is increasingly important, and education plays a pivotal role in equipping students with the skills and values necessary for such contributions.

During the 19-day Student Induction Programme, the newly-admitted students will participate in academic orientation sessions, expert lectures, interactive discussions, workshops, cultural programmes, and experiential activities designed to familiarize them with the University’s academic framework, student support services, research opportunities, innovation ecosystem, and holistic learning environment. This comprehensive approach to student induction reflects a growing recognition of the diverse needs of students as they transition into university life. By providing a well-rounded introduction to the university's resources and opportunities, RGU aims to empower students to take full advantage of their educational experience.

As students embark on this new chapter of their lives, the insights shared by Hiren Chandra Nath serve as a reminder of the importance of cultivating a positive outlook, maintaining strong relationships, and being mindful of one's impact on the world. These principles not only contribute to individual well-being but also foster a sense of community and responsibility that is essential for a thriving society. In a time when challenges abound, embracing positivity may very well be the key to navigating the complexities of life and education.
