Himachal Pradesh's Education Minister Rohit Thakur announced the ongoing recruitment of 3,468 teachers for CBSE-affiliated schools, aiming to enhance educational standards in the state.
New Delhi, India Jul 9, 2026 ALN: Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur has announced that the recruitment process for 3,468 teaching positions in CBSE-affiliated government schools is currently underway. This initiative is part of the state government’s broader efforts to strengthen school education and position Himachal Pradesh as a leading education hub. The recruitment of teachers is crucial not only for improving academic standards but also for ensuring that students receive quality education in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.
During a review meeting of the Education Department, Minister Thakur revealed that requisitions for 2,668 regular teaching posts across 19 categories have already been forwarded to the Himachal Pradesh Rajya Chayan Aayog, Hamirpur. This move is expected to address the long-standing issue of teacher shortages in various subjects, which has been a challenge for the state's educational infrastructure. Additionally, 800 temporary teachers in various subjects, including Mathematics, are being engaged to enhance academic standards in CBSE-affiliated schools. The inclusion of temporary teachers is a strategic decision aimed at bridging immediate gaps in teaching staff while the recruitment process for regular posts is underway.
Thakur stated that the recruitment for teachers in subjects such as Sanskrit, Physical Education, Music, Drawing, Science, Commerce, Economics, Political Science, History, Hindi, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Computer Science, Fine Arts, and Public Administration will also be completed shortly. This diverse range of subjects reflects the government's commitment to a well-rounded education system that caters to the varied interests and academic needs of students.
In reviewing the CBSE school initiative, the Minister informed that approval has been granted to 158 government schools, with 146 already securing CBSE affiliation. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliation is significant as it aligns these schools with national educational standards, offering students a curriculum that is recognized across India. To bolster teaching in these institutions, the government has engaged 400 temporary teachers in various subjects, including Mathematics. The recruitment of these teachers is essential for maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that students have access to quality education. So far, 292 teachers and 284 Mathematics teachers have joined their respective schools, indicating a proactive approach to addressing educational needs.
As part of the Dr. Y.S. Parmar Digital Student Scheme, Rohit Thakur reported that 9,359 students have received tablets over the last three academic sessions. This initiative is particularly important in the context of increasing digital literacy and integrating technology into education. The shift towards digital learning tools is essential in preparing students for a technology-driven world. He directed officials to ensure that all remaining eligible students receive the benefit through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode without delay, emphasizing the government's commitment to inclusive education.
The Minister noted that all government schools in the state have now been integrated with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure. For the first time, approval has been secured for the replacement of computers in 524 government schools, which is a significant step towards modernizing educational facilities. Furthermore, BSNL has finalized the networking tender for 777 government schools, which is expected to significantly enhance digital connectivity and technology-enabled learning. The integration of ICT in education is crucial for fostering a learning environment that encourages innovation and engagement among students.
In a review of recruitment and service-related matters, the Minister directed officials to provide a second opportunity to SMC teachers who could not qualify in the first attempt and to prioritize the resolution of all pending service-related cases. He mentioned that counseling for Shastri posts has been completed, and appointment letters have been issued to 191 selected candidates. The recruitment process for 870 Physical Education Teacher (PET) posts has also been initiated, with counseling for 355 posts already completed. This surge in recruitment activity is indicative of the government's focus on enhancing the quality of physical education, which is an integral part of holistic student development.
The meeting revealed that 486 Lecturer (Physical Education) posts have been created, and approval has been sought for filling another 112 posts. Additionally, the Minister reviewed the recruitment of Multi Task Workers, stating that 6,703 out of the 8,000 sanctioned posts have already been filled. This comprehensive recruitment strategy is essential for ensuring that schools are adequately staffed to meet the diverse needs of students.
During the review of the social audit of the PM POSHAN scheme, officials informed the Minister that the State Social Audit Unit had completed audits in 503 schools during the 2025-26 period. He directed all districts to submit Action Taken Reports promptly and implement corrective measures wherever necessary. The PM POSHAN scheme is a crucial initiative aimed at providing nutritious meals to school children, thereby addressing issues of hunger and malnutrition that can impede academic performance.
The Minister also reviewed the Dr. Y.S. Parmar Vidyarthi Rin Yojana, which allows eligible students to avail education loans of up to ₹20 lakh at just one percent interest. He instructed the Higher Education Department to simplify the scheme to enhance accessibility, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder students from pursuing higher education. The focus on student loans is particularly relevant given the rising costs of education and the need for financial support systems that enable students to achieve their academic aspirations.
Rohit Thakur announced that the state government has released ₹19 crore to the Public Works Department (PWD) and HIMUDA for the repair and reconstruction of schools damaged during the 2023 and 2025 natural disasters. Natural disasters can severely disrupt educational infrastructure, and timely restoration is vital for minimizing the impact on students' learning experiences. He added that ₹101 crore has been approved for restoration works, while another ₹80 crore is yet to be received. This financial commitment underscores the government's dedication to maintaining and improving school facilities in the face of unforeseen challenges.
He instructed officials to complete all pending formalities to expedite the restoration of educational infrastructure, highlighting the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure that students can return to safe and conducive learning environments.
The Minister directed officials to operationalize non-functional Kendriya Vidyalayas at the earliest and develop an effective mechanism for issuing timely weather advisories to schools. This is especially important in a region that can be prone to extreme weather conditions, ensuring that schools can take necessary precautions to protect students and staff. He also urged the department to create awareness about the Government of India Teacher Award-2026 to encourage greater participation from Himachal Pradesh, which can foster a culture of recognition and appreciation for outstanding educators.
The meeting also reviewed the proposal for establishing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) University in the state. The establishment of such an institution would be a significant step towards positioning Himachal Pradesh at the forefront of technological education and innovation. It would provide students with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and skill development in the field of AI, which is becoming increasingly relevant in various sectors.
Measures for identifying and mainstreaming out-of-school children were also discussed. Advocating for greater use of technology in governance, Rohit Thakur suggested adopting online inspection mechanisms through WhatsApp and Google Meet, similar to practices in Jammu and Kashmir, to strengthen monitoring, improve administrative efficiency, and reduce delays in decision-making.
