Janaki and Ilaiyaraaja: The partnership that transformed Tamil music

New Delhi, India Jul 11, 2026 ALN: Chennai: When she rendered her voice for Machanai Partheengala (Did you see my darling) for Ilaiyaraaja’s debut film, Annakili, in 1975, S Janaki was already a household name, having sung memorable numbers for films with the legendary M S Viswanathan and others.

But, undoubtedly, it was Annakili that catapulted Janaki to the top of the Tamil film industry. She dominated the playback singing arena for over five decades, working with almost every popular music director from Viswanathan to Ilaiyaraaja to A R Rahman.

However, it was for Ilaiyaraaja’s songs that Janaki’s voice effortlessly translated his music. “I gave her ample opportunities because of her gifted talent. More than her voice, it was her intellect that impressed me; she understood exactly what a composer expected, which is why she became the legend she is,” he said.

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who recorded hundreds of songs with her, once remarked that Janaki’s voice emanated from her soul.

“When we were recording the Margazhi Thingal song for Sangamam, I felt the sound wasn’t just coming from the microphone — it was coming from Janaki Amma’s soul. That is her special quality; she sings from within,” he added.

S Janaki, often affectionately referred to as Janaki Amma, was born on April 23, 1938, in a small village in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
