Singapore Airlines responds to investor concerns regarding its Air India investment, emphasizing growth opportunities and ongoing transformation efforts.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has publicly defended its investment in Air India, asserting that it provides access to growth opportunities that cannot be fully realized through a single-hub model. This statement comes as the airline prepares for its annual general meeting (AGM) on July 24, 2026. The AGM is a critical event for shareholders and stakeholders, where key decisions regarding the airline's future direction, financial performance, and strategic initiatives are discussed. SIA's defense of its investment in Air India is particularly significant in the context of the rapidly evolving aviation landscape.

SIA, the only non-Indian airline group with a direct stake in India's aviation market, owns 25.1% of Air India following its merger with former associate Vistara in November 2024. This merger was a landmark event in the Indian aviation sector, consolidating SIA's position and influence within the market. The airline emphasized that the investment allows direct access to India's domestic market and international flows via Indian hubs, complementing its Singapore hub. This multi-hub strategy is designed to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency, enabling SIA to leverage the burgeoning demand for air travel in India, one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.

Responding to Investor Concerns

In response to questions from the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) (Sias), SIA acknowledged the challenges Air India faces, including high fuel prices, the depreciation of the Indian rupee, and supply chain disruptions. High fuel prices, in particular, remain a significant concern for airlines globally, impacting operating costs and profitability. The depreciation of the Indian rupee against major currencies also poses a challenge for Air India, affecting its financial performance and ability to procure aircraft and spare parts from international markets. Despite these hurdles, SIA highlighted the "tangible progress" Air India has made in transforming its customer experience, fleet, and operational performance. The airline has undertaken significant initiatives aimed at modernizing its fleet and improving service quality, which are essential for regaining market share in a competitive environment.

SIA noted that these efforts have led to significant improvements in Air India's net promoter score, a key measure of customer satisfaction, and the airline has received several independent industry awards. The enhancement of customer experience is critical in the airline industry, where passenger loyalty can significantly influence profitability. Improved customer satisfaction can lead to higher load factors and increased revenue, which are essential for Air India's long-term viability.

Strategic Oversight and Support

As a significant minority shareholder, SIA remains committed to supporting Air India's transformation alongside its partner, Tata Sons. Tata Sons, a major player in various sectors in India, acquired Air India in 2021, marking a new chapter for the airline. This partnership is pivotal, as it combines SIA's operational expertise and international experience with Tata's deep understanding of the Indian market. This support includes strategic oversight, with SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong serving as a non-executive, non-independent director on Air India's board. This arrangement allows SIA and Tata Sons to provide strategic guidance to the airline's management, ensuring that both entities work collaboratively towards common goals.

Goh previously stated that the Air India investment fits into SIA's multi-hub strategy, compensating for the lack of a domestic market. This strategic alignment is crucial, as it allows SIA to diversify its revenue streams and mitigate risks associated with reliance on a single market. The multi-hub model enables SIA to tap into different geographic regions, enhancing its competitive edge in the global aviation industry.

Investment Parameters and Financial Performance

Sias also inquired about SIA's capital allocation parameters for Air India and the circumstances under which it would consider approving additional capital. The association noted that SIA's share of losses from Air India amounted to S$945.2 million, while the group's operating profit rose 39% to S$2.4 billion for the financial year ending March 31, 2026. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by Air India, as it continues to navigate its turnaround strategy while SIA experiences robust growth in other areas of its operations.

At the end of the fiscal year, the carrying value of SIA's investment in Air India stood at S$1.1 billion, down from S$2 billion the previous year. This decline reflects the ongoing challenges faced by Air India, including its reported net liabilities of S$1 billion after posting a net loss of S$3.8 billion for the year. The financial performance of Air India underscores the complexities involved in the airline's restructuring efforts and the need for sustained investment and strategic oversight.

In response, SIA stated that its capital allocation follows a disciplined evaluation process, considering operating cash flow, investment requirements for new aircraft, and strategic investments like its stake in Air India. This disciplined approach is essential for ensuring that SIA's investments yield long-term value and align with the company's overall strategic objectives.

Future Guidance and Transparency

Sias asked whether SIA had considered adopting a structured forward guidance framework for FY2027 to enhance investor confidence. SIA clarified that it does not practice a formal quantitative forward guidance framework due to uncertainties in the aviation industry, which can be influenced by external factors such as jet fuel prices and geopolitical developments. The airline industry is inherently volatile, with fluctuations in demand, regulatory changes, and economic conditions impacting performance. As such, SIA's cautious approach to forward guidance reflects a recognition of these inherent uncertainties.

Nonetheless, SIA remains committed to transparency through regular disclosures, including monthly operating results and quarterly financial announcements. This commitment to transparency is vital for maintaining investor trust and confidence, particularly in a period of significant transformation for Air India. By providing regular updates on performance metrics and strategic initiatives, SIA aims to keep stakeholders informed and engaged in the airline's journey.

As SIA prepares for its AGM, it aims to reassure investors of its commitment to Air India's transformation and the strategic importance of its investment in the airline. The AGM will serve as a platform for SIA to outline its vision for the future, discuss ongoing initiatives, and address any concerns raised by shareholders. The outcomes of this meeting will be closely watched by industry analysts and investors, as they seek to gauge the potential impact of SIA's investment on its overall performance and the future of Air India in the competitive aviation landscape.
