Vodka is capturing a record share of India's liquor market, driven by younger consumers and women. This trend marks a significant structural shift towards white spirits, especially vodka. Radico Khaitan's vodka business has seen substantial growth over the past five years.

Mumbai: Vodka is stealing a record slice of India's whisky-dominated liquor market, with younger consumers and women driving the sharpest shift ever toward white spirits. The trend has given a fillip to the company that had already premiumised its whisky portfolio.

The vodka category's share has risen to 6.1% from 3.8% in 2025. It's a major structural shift which is happening towards the white spirits, especially vodka," Radico Khaitan MD Abhishek Khaitan said. "Vodka's mixability is one factor, while flavours are helping bring new consumers into the category," he added.

This transformation in consumer preferences is not just a fleeting trend; it reflects a broader change in the Indian liquor market. The increasing popularity of vodka among younger drinkers is indicative of a shift towards lighter, more versatile spirits. Traditionally, the Indian liquor market has been dominated by whisky, which has long been considered the drink of choice for many consumers, particularly among older demographics. However, the rise of vodka signifies a notable departure from this norm, suggesting a generational shift in tastes and preferences.

Radico Khaitan has strategically focused on premiumizing its whisky offerings to adapt to this changing landscape. By enhancing the quality and appeal of its whisky portfolio, the company aims to reduce its dependence on lower-priced liquor and commodity selling. This strategy aligns with the broader industry trend where brands are increasingly looking to offer premium products that resonate with discerning consumers. The move towards premiumization is not only about improving product quality but also about creating a brand experience that appeals to a younger, more aspirational audience.

The rise of vodka is also attributed to its appeal among women, who are increasingly becoming a significant demographic in the liquor market. This demographic shift is prompting brands to innovate and diversify their product offerings to cater to a wider audience. Women are often seen as key influencers in purchasing decisions, and their growing presence in the market is reshaping how liquor companies approach marketing and product development. Brands are now focusing on creating vibrant, flavorful vodka options that are not only enjoyable to drink but also align with the lifestyle aspirations of modern consumers.

The increase in vodka consumption can also be linked to changing social norms and attitudes towards drinking in India. As urbanization continues to rise and more young people enter the workforce, there is a cultural shift towards socializing in bars and restaurants, where vodka-based cocktails are often the drink of choice. This shift is further supported by the growth of the nightlife scene in major cities like Mumbai and Delhi, where a vibrant cocktail culture is emerging. Vodka's versatility in mixology makes it an attractive option for consumers looking to experiment with different flavors and combinations.

Moreover, the marketing strategies employed by vodka brands have played a crucial role in its rising popularity. Many brands are leveraging social media platforms to engage with younger audiences, utilizing influencers and targeted advertising to reach potential consumers. This digital-first approach allows brands to create a strong presence and build community around their products, further driving interest and sales.

As the market continues to evolve, companies like Radico Khaitan are likely to invest further in marketing and product development to capitalize on the growing demand for vodka and other white spirits. This could lead to the introduction of innovative flavors and packaging that appeal to younger consumers, as well as collaborations with mixologists to create signature cocktails that highlight the unique qualities of vodka.

In conclusion, the rise of vodka in India is not merely a trend but a reflection of changing consumer preferences and market dynamics. As younger consumers and women drive this shift, the liquor industry must adapt to meet their evolving tastes and expectations. This ongoing transformation presents both challenges and opportunities for established brands and new entrants alike. As competition intensifies, the ability to innovate and connect with consumers on a personal level will be crucial for success in this rapidly changing landscape.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how the vodka market continues to develop in India. Will it maintain its momentum and further challenge the dominance of whisky, or will traditional spirits reclaim their place in the hearts of consumers? The answer will likely depend on how well brands can navigate the complexities of consumer preferences and the broader socio- factors influencing the liquor market. As the industry adapts to these changes, the future of vodka in India appears promising, with potential for sustained growth and diversification.
