The Indian rupee fell 11 paise to close at 95.55 against the U.S. dollar, influenced by a strong dollar and fluctuating crude oil prices.

The Indian rupee experienced a notable decline against the U.S. dollar, settling lower by 11 paise at 95.55 on Thursday, August 27, 2026. This decline comes amid a backdrop of a robust American currency and a weakening domestic market, particularly highlighted by significant drops in key stock indices such as the Sensex and Nifty.

Forex traders have indicated that the strength of the U.S. dollar in international markets has overshadowed any potential support the rupee might have gained from falling crude oil prices. The recent fluctuation in oil prices is particularly noteworthy, as Brent crude dipped below the $90 mark for the first time in several sessions. This decline is attributed to ongoing discussions between Iran and Oman regarding a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait, which, although not finalized, has alleviated some concerns regarding a prolonged disruption in global oil supplies.

On the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.50, reaching an intraday high of 95.40 and a low of 95.56 before concluding the day at 95.55, reflecting an overall decrease of 11 paise from its previous close. This drop is significant when considering that just two days prior, on August 25, the rupee had settled higher by 26 paise at 95.44 against the dollar. The Indian forex market had been closed on August 26 in observance of Id-e-Milad, which may have contributed to the volatility observed during this trading session.

Market analysts and forex traders are closely monitoring upcoming events, particularly the speech by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium. This event is typically significant as it can provide insights into the Fed's monetary policy direction, which in turn influences global currency markets. The anticipation surrounding this speech adds an additional layer of complexity to the current forex landscape.

According to Anindya Banerjee, Head of Commodity and Currency Research at Kotak Securities, the rupee's performance this month can be largely attributed to capital flows into India. The special swap facility has reportedly attracted inflows totaling nearly $73 billion as of August 21, with over $65 billion coming through Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR(B)) deposits. This figure is approximately two-and-a-half times higher than what was raised during a similar scheme in 2013. With the deadline for deposits approaching on August 31 and the European Central Bank (ECB) window remaining open until December, Banerjee estimates that total flows under these schemes could reach between $85 billion to $90 billion.

This influx of capital has created a substantial reserve for the Indian economy, suggesting that the rupee's potential for appreciation remains largely untapped. Banerjee expressed an optimistic outlook for the rupee, projecting an operational range between 95 to 96. He noted that a close below 95 could trigger a further decline towards 94, while maintaining a bullish stance on the Indian rupee overall.

In the broader context, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the U.S. dollar against a basket of six major currencies, was trading at 99.21, reflecting a slight increase of 0.05%. This uptick in the dollar index further underscores the challenges faced by the rupee in gaining ground against the greenback.

Meanwhile, in domestic markets, the situation was equally concerning as the Sensex fell by 539.35 points to close at 76,933.59, while the Nifty dropped 116.90 points to settle at 24,090.85. The decline in these indices was primarily driven by significant losses in major banking stocks, particularly HDFC Bank, which has a substantial influence on overall market performance.

Despite the downturn, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were active in the market, purchasing equities worth Rs 502.63 crore on a net basis on August 26. This activity indicates that, despite the rupee's challenges and the volatility in stock markets, there remains a level of confidence among foreign investors in the Indian equity landscape.

In summary, the rupee's decline against the U.S. dollar is emblematic of broader market pressures, including the strength of the dollar, fluctuations in oil prices, and significant movements in equity markets. As global economic conditions evolve and domestic factors continue to play a role, stakeholders will be keenly observing upcoming developments, particularly in U.S. monetary policy, and their potential implications for the Indian currency and economy.
